"Zion Overlook" 30 x 24 pastel

Colleen K. (Pope) Howe was born in American Fork, Utah in 1953. Soon after, she and her family moved to the Big Hole Valley in southwestern Montana. A deep love for this beautiful valley developed and has become the basis for her love of being outdoors and painting the landscape

Colleen studied painting at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. She has also taken intensive painting workshops from Michael workman, Sally Strand, Doug Dawson, Ted Goerschner and Ken Baxter. Colleen continues to favor the subject of landscape, looking for the most expressive ways to convey the spirit and beauty of open space.

An important aspect of her life at present is teaching. "I will continue to dedicate part of my artistic time to passing along the information I have learned from others and my own experience. To become a painter basically boils down to a lot of hard work, with some 'Aha!' instruction and/or discovery along the way. If I am part of that, it makes me feel like I am contributing something to a very fine history of painters, past, present, and future." Colleen currently teaches in Salt Lake City and also teaches weeklong intensive workshops nationally. She is president of the Pastel Society of Utah and past president of the Intermountain Society of Artists.
